About Songkran

Songkran is the festival or visiting temples, family reunions and house cleaning to welcome the New Year. It is the Thai New Year festival. Thais observe holidays with friends and families. The festival officially lasts for three days and has holidays from 13th to 15th April every year but the celebration is week long. Thais traditionally sprinkle gentle warm water on close friends, relatives and neighbors to wash the bad luck of the previous year and to give a fresh start for future.

However, Songkran in Pattaya is different. The above-mentioned activities take place in the temples and traditional house with religious Buddhist making merit that is visiting the nine holy temples but the streets of Pattaya gradually develops, to be precise people from all around the city  and country starts gathering around the bars and the streets in a water war which is for fun and is light-hearted.

Wan Lai festival

Songkran formally lasts for 3 days but the festival extends to a week long celebration and the last day is the craziest which is the Wan Lai day meaning “day that flows”. On the Wan Lai day, water flows continuously and be prepared to get drenched thoroughly when you are out on the street.

Almost every individual carry water dispenser while some like using a bucket and other also make use of high pressure pipes to make the people on the streets wet. However, police do not favor the use of hoses and will confiscate the hose if they catch people with high-pressure hoses.

Places to visit

During the festival, people gather around the bars to reload their water gun. When you go to reload your gun, you might be asked to take a drink. Broadly speaking, bars become a nest of the water shooters during Songkran. Another place where people gathers the most is Beach road which is blocked, stages are set with foam machine and for entertaining the water shooters with live music.

Do’s and don’ts

The list of do’s and don’ts during the Songkran festival is quite long and you must follow it to avoid any untoward incident.

Do’s

  • Make sure to use the waterproof bag for protecting your valuables.
  • If you destination is one of the hotspots of Songkran then use public transport as traffic around the city comes to a halt.
  • As you pass the local Thais on the street wish them happy new year and smile and enjoy to the fullest.

Don’ts

  • Do not drench the monks, elderly and the babies
  • Remember not to drive if you take alcohol
  • Never throw icy cool water and dirty water
  • Never ever throw water to the motorcyclist as it may cause a fatal accident.
